Jessica Yang grew up in the Bay Area. Her focus in high school was art. Jessica’s interests developed towards Architecture and Urban Design in UC Berkeley. She will graduate with a BA in Architecture and minors in City and Regional Planning and Landscape by year 2010. With an extra year extension, she was able to pursue her focus in urban design in Berlin and Hong Kong semester exchange programs.
Jessica’s passion for researching social and environmentally responsible urban designs was stirred by her experience with the Magnolia Project, a Hurricane Katrina recovery project. She is currently in her second summer volunteering with the Magnolia Project and is completing a photo documentary concentrating on the five different perspectives on the rebuilding of New Orleans. The hurricane revealed many unspoken and hidden issues within the American society that is often looked over and ignored. She hopes to understand the deeper issues and its relations to design to look for possible solutions or better ways of designing urban spaces that will bridge social stratifications and bring communities together with more sustainable and educational support.
